The origin of BEST dates back to year 1873, when it was first established in the name of The Bombay Tramway Co. Ltd. Later the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai has taken over the said company on 7th August 1947, and it was renamed as Bombay Electric Supply and Transport Undertaking. During the past 51 years after municipalisation, it has registered a steady growth from 23 to 390 routes with 26 Bus Depots, 42 Bus Stations, and 114 Bus Chowkies.
